The Importance of SPF during the Summer Months

Want to know beauty’s greatest secret to younger skin? Applying sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more, every day, all year round, not just during the Summer! Sun damage is the biggest killer for our face.

Why? Sunlight is made up of a spectrum of wavelengths – some more visible and others, such as ultraviolet (UV), which is invisible. Around 95% of the UV radiation reaching our skin is ultraviolet A (UVA) light. This penetrates deep into the skin. The effects aren’t noticeable straight away, as they impact the skin over time, causing premature ageing such as pigmentation, age spots and wrinkles. Ultraviolet B (UVB) rays are what cause sunburn, and UVA and UVB have been linked to skin cancer.

UVA rays remain strong throughout the year, whilst UVB rays are weaker in the winter, therefore we are less likely to get a sunburn during that time.

Direct rays of sunlight hitting your skin, intensify the UV effect by up to 200%, and don’t think you’re safe indoors, 50 – 60% of UVA rays can still penetrate through glass. We can’t ever totally avoid exposing our skin to the sun, which is why using sunscreen every day is so important.

SPF contains filters that act as a barrier, which prevents UV from reaching your skin. The higher the SPF, the greater protection it will give. Remember, you WILL still tan using a high SPF. The quicker the tan, the more damage it causes long term, and the greater protection your skin has, the longer your colour will last. UVA/UVB rays are significantly stronger during the Summer.

SPF Tips:

  1. Use a teaspoon amount for the face and neck.
  2. Don’t forget your ears and eyelids.
  3. Always use a formula that contains UVA & UVB protection.
  4. Apply SPF 15 to 30 minutes before going out into the sun.
  5. Wait for 10 to 20 minutes before getting dressed, to give it a chance to be absorbed into the skin.
  6. Re-apply every 2 – 4 hours.
  7. Use a moisturiser and foundation that contains SPF 30 – 50. We recommend Dermaquest SheerZinc SPF 30 Tinted Moisturisers. They come in three shades – Nude, Sunkissed & Tan. Dermaquest Youth Protection SPF 30 protects against Blue light caused by computers and phones. Dermaquest CBD Blue Light Defense SPF 30. This one protects against blue light, infrared and UV rays.

If you have noticed signs of sun damage, we recommend a course of IPL Skin Rejuvenation treatment. This will help reduce dark spots, pigmentation and sun damage.
