Why Hyaluronic Acid Is So Good For The Skin

HA (Hyaluronic Acid) is a naturally occurring, sugar packed with skin-boosting benefits, that hydrates and holds 1000x its weight in moisture. It continues to work overtime, replenishing the skin, enhancing texture, and giving a healthy, supple finish. Research has discovered that Hyaluronic Acid is not just a skincare trend. It is scientifically proven to actually be one of the most beneficial ingredients for the skin.

Hyaluronic acid is also known as a glycosaminoglycan, which is an advanced name for an essential naturally occurring substance. Glycosaminoglycans (HA) act as a stabilizer, keeping skin constantly revived, renewed and revitalised. Hyaluronic acid is also a humectant. Humectants are often found in water-based moisturisers and serums, which boost hydration and are extremely beneficial for dry to extra dry skin.

Humectants are also hygroscopic – ingredients that draw moisture from their surroundings.

One gram of hyaluronic acid can hold up to six litres of water! Hence why it’s most commonly recommended for dry, dehydrated skin, fine lines and wrinkles. HA holds onto water in the skin, which hydrates from the inside out, giving a noticeably glowing, more radiant, smooth appearance. Therefore, it is great for premature skin that is losing  firmness, loss of plumpness and suppleness. Hyaluronic Acid is also a calming antioxidant that is gentle enough for those with eczema-prone and rosacea-prone skin.

Used incorrectly, HA could also dehydrate your skin. The molecule needs water to plump, so without any moisture on the surface of the skin or from the air, it can pull the water from deep inside your skin. To prevent this, use HA on damp skin, then add your moisturiser.

We recommend adding Hyaluronic Acid into your daily skincare routine, using Dermaquest UK Advanced B5 Hydrating Serum. Available at The Kent Aesthetics Clinic.
